The mini-series is an absolute masterpiece and one that should be on everyone’s watchlist. It features some familiar faces in the Flanagan universe such as Carla Gugino, Henry Thomas, and Kate Siegel, and we saw a few new faces that I hope we will see in future Flanagan projects. Gugino’s Verna is beautiful and divine, and she devours every single actor in her path, except Kate Siegel, Kyliegh Curran, and Mark Hamill as Camille, Lenore, and Arthur Pym, respectively.

Whatever level you’re at, it’s a formula for a series of moment-to-moment effectiveness, with some cleverness and much playful horror. But in its wish-fulfillment approach to a very real tragedy, the haunting here is more fleeting and less marrow-deep than Flanagan’s best work.

Filled with tension and the gothic romanticism and selfishness that begets penance and revenge, The Fall of the House of Usher is a stunning tribute and exhaustive love letter to the works of one of America’s most prolific writers. Even if it isn’t perfect, the series is one that you can fall into deeply, especially if you share the reverence Mike Flanagan has for the Master of the Macabre. Yes, Flanagan takes classics and morphs them into something dynamic, emotional, and original as he builds connective tissue between each adapted story and character that makes this story feel like something lived in and original without becoming a cacophony of Poe references. Flanagan isn’t one for shot-for-shot adaptations, and that’s what has made his take on both The Haunting of Hill House and The Turning of the Screw in his first two Netflix horror series a critical success.
The Haunting of Hill House set the bar for scares in Flanagan’s filmography, and The Fall of the Usher meets those expectations with ease thanks to the work of cinematographer Michael Fimognari (Flanagan and Fimognari have enjoyed a long partnership, dating back to 2013’s Oculus). Like Hill House before it, House of Usher features a good blend of slow, spooky scares and outright shrieks as Roderick recounts his complicated tale to Auguste in the musty carcass of his childhood home. Both the past and present timelines are filled with the kind of horrors you’ve come to expect from Flanagan, but he really flexes in the methodology of murder as tragedy barrels its way through the Usher family. The first two episodes of The Fall of the House of Usher premiered at Fantastic Fest in September 2023 before the Netflix release the following month, being viewed more than 13 million times in its first two weeks.
We do get some fabulous creative moments, like Flanagan’s gleeful edit of an opening montage that introduces us to all members of the Usher family through witty cross-cuts and overlapping dialogue. If what you came for were eight cycles of impending doom counting down to their garish conclusions, you’re in luck. Trucco’s character is Rufus Griswold, a name shared with the 19th century scribe whose reflections on Poe after the latter’s death helped shape our possibly incorrect perception of the author as an opioid-addicted madman, which adds a layer of irony to Flanagan’s Sackler-esque prism. Costumes and hair, incidentally, are a huge part of the characterizations in this show, from Greenwood’s mustache to Thomas’ disturbing man-bun.
(Poe probably wasn’t even an opium addict.) Perhaps that’s because a part of Flanagan would rather be writing his own stories. House of Usher contains many moments of pure, undiluted horror, stylish and masterful. But the show drowns in its uneven grasp of the source material, when it needn’t have relied on source material at all. The key to the ideal Flanagan series likely lies not with more cherry-picked adaptations, but with more stories that are entirely Flanagan’s own. Flanagan takes a kind of mix-and-match approach to his biggest references that frequently makes their origin stories nearly incidental.
